He was under house arrest for being a dick to the Pope, not for being wrong. There were aspects of his theory that the church was unable to confirm at the time, but they didn't go after him until he started being anti-papist (and heck, the Jesuits even heavily supported his theories). All of this can be found in the first few paragraphs of his wikipedia article.

The pope should really sanctify all the water in world just on the off chance vampires are real.

What if the Pope is a vampire and only pretends to use his holy-water-making powers to preserve his race?

I sent Adrian Pearson a message on facebook asking about the identity of Shakespeare and the connection to Pope Adrian IV "Breakspeare."
Depending on his answer (if he answers at all), I'll be able to get confirmation.

In all fairness, that isn't necessarily an atheistic view point. There are some Christians that feel this way due to the hierarchy and traditions of the Catholic Church. This was especially relevant in America when JFK was running for President because there were smear campaigns stating JFK as President would be a direct puppet to the Pope, reasoning all Catholics have to follow the Pope's every command. Also in the UK in relation to the Royal family, stemming in part from of the whole Henry VIII/Anglicanism falling out with the Pope ordeal. Many times throughout history, and still with some people in modern times, the Catholic Church has been seem as some sort of dictatorship.

He set aside all the gear the previous pope gave to him, so I'd assume he has low level gear

The Pope, David Beckham and a little girl are in an airplane that is going to crash. There are two parachutes.

David Beckham says that because he is internationally famous he deserves a parachute. He picks up a pack, puts it on and jumps out.

The pope leans down to the little girl and tells her that because she is young and has a long life ahead of her that she should get the last parachute.

The little girl responds "But father, Mr. Beckham took my backpack. There are still two parachutes."
